WomenShelter strongly believes that education and awareness play a crucial role in both the prevention and cessation of domestic violence.
In fact, WSLB has witnessed firsthand the enormous impact that it’s Outreach & Education Department (O&E) efforts have had in the community and the lives of those who have participated in its educational presentations, events, and workshops. Last year, WSLB’s Outreach & Education Department reached more than 3,452 individuals through its prevention programs. In addition, WSLB’s youth advocates provided education to over 1,800 children.
The staff of the Outreach & Education Department is a dedicated group of individuals who have many years of experience presenting on topics such as Domestic Violence 101, Victim Impact, Building Healthy Relationships, and many more. Domestic Violence is not something that we often talk about, but we should. It is something that affects more than 12 million people each year. On average, 24 people per minute are victims of rape, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner.
There is a solution. Education in the form of presentations, workshops, trainings, and conversations provide life-changing and life-saving information. WomenShelter offers the community education through its dynamic Outreach & Education Program.

Outreach & Education Programs
Domestic Violence is public health issue. WSLB staff is available to provide you with education regarding the complex nature of abuse, the challenges victims face, the link between domestic violence and homelessness, and other important awareness raising topics.

DV 101
Domestic Violence (DV) affects far more than the victim and the victim’s family. Domestic Violence ripples through the community touching the lives of many, even those who are not acquainted with the victim. This can include friends, teachers, coworkers, supervisors, schools, businesses, and more.

October Domestic Violence Awareness Month Event
Statistically, 1 out of 4 women and 1 out of 7 men will experience domestic violence at some point in their life. Nearly 3 out of 4 individuals personally know someone who is or has been a victim of domestic violence. It is important for us as a community to recognize the prevalence of domestic violence and how we can work together to eliminate violence.
During October, National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, WomenShelter of Long Beach reaffirms its commitment to helping victims, supporting survivors, and educating the community about Domestic Violence.
Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month
Statistics indicate that nearly 1.5 million high school students nationwide experience physical abuse from a dating partner each year. One in ten high school students has been purposefully hit, slapped or physically hurt by their dating partner. Reports further indicate that the severity of intimate partner violence is often greater in cases where the pattern of abuse was established in adolescence.
In response to the enormous need for youth focused prevention education, WomenShelter of Long Beach (WSLB) is hosts a special conference, Building Healthy Relationships through Prevention Education, each year during the month of February, National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. All are welcome to join WSLB, especially youth, teens, adult caregivers/parents, and service providers.
40 Hour Domestic Violence Counselor Advocate Training:
WomenShelter of Long Beach hosts the state mandated 40 Hour Domestic Violence Counselor Advocate Training three times a year: Winter, Summer, and Fall. WomenShelter’s training takes place over the course of five consecutive Fridays from 8am to 5:15pm. WSLB’s training includes presentations from experts within the DV field and covers a wide range of topics.
Training Topics Include:
- Overview of Domestic Violence & Societal Attitudes
- Children & Youth/Peer Counseling/Crisis Intervention/Cultural Competency
- Legal Issues/Police Response/Criminal Prosecution
- Housing/Public Assistance/Financial/Health & Referral Services
